Eco - Hewelianum
The aim of project Eco - Hewelianum is to create an Education Park on the grounds of the Fort of Góra Gradowa (Hagelsberg) in Gdańsk. It is one element of a wider concept to create the Hewelianum Centre - a modern-day science & education centre. The project also includes a nature trail which show visitors the most important and prized species of flora and fauna, such as bats or common ivy, and can be found on the grounds of the Fort of Góra Gradowa.
The Hewelianum Centre promotes various forms of active protection of nature, including designating sites as protected habitats or monuments of nature, as well as providing booths for birds and bats. There are also information boards, located at nature trails, containing information on rules concerning bird feeding. All this provides much-needed education for children, teenagers and adults who can enjoy the beauty of nature in the centre of a big city. “Discover, relax, and learn. The ECO – Hewelianum education and information campaign” – this idea sums up the core values of the project - to promote knowledge concerning renewable energy sources and the positive attitudes towards nature that can be found at the Fort of Góra Gradowa. For this purpose, an ecological Home has been built, fitted with energy-saving systems.
The Hewelianum Centre is also preparing educational materials in the form of games, including educational web-based games, providing information about the unique ecosystem of the Fort of Góra Gradowa.
Moreover, the Hewelianum Centre offers the opportunity to see a working system of heat pumps, installed at the South Caponiere which forms a part of the “Energy, Sky and Sun” exhibition. Under the framework of the Baltic Festival of Science, the Hewelianum Centre organizes field workshops under the slogan of: “Seeing eye-to-eye with nature in the city - or green walks around the Grodzisko site”. The purpose of these walks is education, recreation and useful entertainment. The opening of a new interactive biology and geography exhibition covering Earth sciences, so fascinating while being so close to everyone’s heart, is already scheduled for 2012.
